Hana Hikes the Hyakumeizan

Border Joy!
Hana, the most amazing Border Terrier and her person Julian Ross, climbed mountains and recorded all of their adventures in a wonderful book "Hana Hikes the Hyakumeizan". I'm just blown away with the journals I'm linking below. If anyone calls a Border Terrier a "small" dog after you see this they are crazy! Borders are tuff and hardy but I think what this wonderful story tells is that they are amazing companions. Tuff, loyal, loving .... Hana and Julian you ROCK!

I guess the reason I blog about hiking with Hana is to encourage others to do it, and as a memory of the fun I have with her. Hana is not special, and she hasn't even got big muscles! I think almost any BT could do the same if started from a young age. Aren't borders just such a wonderful breed? You're right - she's a true companion, and hiking without her isn't the same. We're getting close to finishing our second set of 100 mountains, so I'll try to send you some photos of the more interesting ones (long and difficult!) which have yet to come.- Julian

Good on you and Hana!! I wish I had both your energies!! Awesome...keep the stories coming, maybe I will become inspired!
Hi there, we are a hiking family -- I'm so glad I found your blog! My kids and I hike 5-10 miles up and down the White Mountains of New Hampshire each week, with a few 1-4 mile hikes along flat surfaces every other day. We're getting a Border Terrier puppy in a few weeks. Do you have any advice regarding how early and how often we should hike with our pup while he's still very young? Of course, we'll heed the advice of a vet, but any words of wisdom you can throw our way would be very helpful. Much obliged! -- Trish
