Hiking with a Border Terrier

One of the greatest things about Border Terriers is their love of the outdoors, in all conditions and terrain. They are small but hardy animals with a ton of stamina. Here's another great post from "Things We Make" with some wonderful photos of their most recent hike with their beautiful Border Terrier Ernie.

Hi there, we're about to get a 7 week old Border Terrier. We hike the White Mountains of New Hampshire all the time (5-10 miles once a week, plus additional walks of 1-3 miles every other day). I was wondering if you have any advice as to when to start hiking with our puppy, how to be careful and not overdo it, etc. I know we can't take him up a mountain right away, however, I was wondering at what age he could begin coming with us? I will check with a vet too, of course, but I wanted to solicit your advice as well. Many thanks!

I would contact Julian, he's hikes all over the world with his border Hana --- http://www.borderjoy.com/blog/hana-hikes-the-hyakumeizan.html

Hope this helps!
